Effect of nitrogen dioxide and ozone on the risk of dying in patients with severe asthma
-
Sunyer J, Basagana X, Belmonte J, et al.: Effect of nitrogen dioxide and ozone on the risk of dying in patients with severe asthma. Thorax 2002, 57:687-693. This study analyzed the relation between risk of asthma death and exposure to ozone and nitrogen dioxide in 1078 subjects from Barcelona, Spain. Nitrogen dioxide was associated with mortality for all causes of death (adjusted odds ratio for an increase of the interquartile range = 1.50, 95% Cl 1.09 to 2.64) in patients with asthma with more than one emergency room admission for asthma. Ozone also increased the risk of death in patients with asthma (OR 1.90, 95% Cl 1.09 to 3.30) during spring and summer.

von Klot S, Wolke G, Tuch T, et al.: Increased asthma medication use in association with ambient fine and ultrafine particles. Eur Respir J 2002, 20:691-702. This study investigated the associations between ambient particle concentrations and the prevalence of inhaled beta2-agonist and asthma symptoms in 53 adult patients with asthma, and it showed that beta2-agonist use was associated with 5-day mean ultrafine particle number in addition to particle mass.

Penttinen P, Timonen KL, Tiittanen P, et al.: Ultrafine particles in urban air and respiratory health among adult asthmatics. Eur Respir J 2001, 17:428-435. This study of asthmatic adults from Helsinki showed that the daily mean number concentration of particles, but not particle mass, was negatively associated with daily peak expiratory flow deviations, suggesting that ultrafine particles may play an important contributory role in asthma morbidity.

Becker S, Fenton MJ, Soukup JM: Involvement of microbial components and toll-like receptors 2 and 4 in cytokine responses to air pollution particles. Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol 2002, 27:611-618. This study used human alveolar macrophages and transfected Chinese hamster cells and demonstrated that microbial components and Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 may be important in controlling the responses of the airway to the effects of particulate pollution.
