    • In other situations bootstrap/jackknife methods are used to provide an estimate of systematic error from resampling the data set: however, such an estimate is not appropriate for characterizing the free energy systematic errors, which are caused by failing to sample the important phase space of the target system in a finite-length simulation. Such systematic error is not represented by the sample dataset itself, nor can it be "extrapolated" from it; thus, the bootstrap/jackknife will fail to render a good estimate.
