    • The acronym STIRAP stands for Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage. The first experimental application of this technique was published in 1990, by U. Gaubetz, P. Rudecki, S. Schiemann, K. Bergmann: J. Chem. Phys. 1990, 92, 5363-5376.

    • The proof is straightfoward. Assume that U is unitary. Then UU̇† = - U̇U†. Moreover (UU̇†)† = (U̇†)†U† = U̇U† = -(U̇U†); i.e., UU̇† is anti-Hermitian. An anti-Hermitian operator can only have purely imaginary diagonal elements. Because we defined U to be purely real, we are guaranteed that UU̇† has no nonzero diagonal matrix elements.
