    • The cortical control of movement revisited
    • The authors present an interesting alternative view on the functional organization of primary motor and premotor cortex. Recent microstimulation studies performed by the authors are put into a broader historical perspective to argue that these cortical areas create a map of manual motor space. This contrasts with the traditional view that motor cortex possesses a course somatomotor map in which neurons in a given region are only related to a portion of the peripheral motor apparatus.

    • Systematic changes in motor cortex cell activity with arm posture during directional isometric force generation
    • This article illustrates how neural activity in primary motor cortex is strongly influenced when directional isometric forces are generated at different initial arm positions. The activity of many neurons was found to change in the magnitude of their discharge and/or in their directional preference (direction associated with maximal activity). As in the study by Kakei et al. [28], some neurons did not show changes in directional tuning with different arm positions. A major strength of this article is a comprehensive discussion of the large body of literature addressing the relationship between motor cortical activity and movement control.

    • Neural activity in primary motor and dorsal premotor cortex in reaching tasks with the contralateral versus ipsilateral arm
    • The authors present a thorough comparison of the neural activity of dorsal premotor and primary motor cortex related to ispi- and contra-lateral limb movements. Although changes in neural activity could be observed in primary motor cortex for movements of either limb, there was a far more robust and consistent response for neurons in dorsal premotor cortex, which suggests a role for a more abstract effector-independent representation of motor action.

    • Synchrony between neurons with similar muscle fields in monkey motor cortex
    • The authors present a technically challenging study that explores the relationship between synchronous firing of primary motor cortex cells and their motor fields identified by postspike facilitation (PSF) or suppression (PSS) of hand muscle EMG. Cell pairs with similar muscle fields tended to show greater synchronization, whereas cell pairs with opposite effects in the same muscles (one with PSF and the other PSS) exhibited negative synchronization. Synchronous firing of motor cortex cells could be present even if neurons had substantially different patterns of activity during behavior.
