    • Without this condition of a fixed value of N, a phase space of a given dimensionality cannot be used and an ensemble method consequently cannot be implemented in phase space. As the value of N changes in the real system, the number of representative systems in the petit ensemble of value N changes, but petit ensembles nevertheless are closed systems for the purpose of enumerating the probability densities.
