24. 2 did not speed up the reaction any further, 9 (a) Preparation of the catalyst (LPSG): Commercially available lithium perchlorate (2g) (Fluka) was dissolved in 10 mL diethyl ether to which was added chromatographic grade silica gel (100-200 mesh) (4g) and the mixture stirred for 30 min. Ether was removed and the material dried in vacuo (0.1 ton) at 150°C for 25h to give the catalyst (LPSG) as a white free flowing powder.
