This feature is not prominent at XPS energies but is much more clearly seen at low photon energy due to cross section effects. See for example the 40. 8 eV spectrum of VC shown in Figure 10. This fact can be attributed to the different photoionization cross sections of the orbitals in question, with d-orbital ionization having a much higher relative cross section in the 40-50 eV photon energy range than at 1486.6 eV.

The C 2s region in the TiC data has greater than anticipated intensity in these 40.8 eV data. We attribute this to the excitation of the Ti MVV Auger feature that is located on the high binding energy side of the C 2s peak. We note that the 40.8 eV photon energy is just below the ionization threshold for the V 3p levels, limiting the impact of resonant PES and Auger electron excitation in the VC data.
