2. The fungal strain was identified as a Penicillium sp. based on fatty acid methyl ester analysis (Microbial ID, Inc. Newark, DE). Their analysis showed a similarity index of 0.85. indicating a good match with the genus Penicillium. No species assignment was achieved using FAME methods.

The fungus was isolated as part of an expedition onboard the research vessel Seward Johnson in 1996, from the surface of the green alga Avrainvillea longicaulis collected at a depth of -5 m from a seagrass bed off Sweetings Cay, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas. The producing strain was cultured for 17 days at 27°C in a medium composed of 0.5% yeast extract, 0.5% peptone, 1.0% glucose, 0.2% crab meal, and 100% seawater.
