A antagonist, bicculine, the authors were able to convert the PLS response into a periodic response. On the basis of this evidence, the authors propose the PLS response found in IC cells is the result of oscillating membrane potentials interacting with an inhibitory input.

Temporal masking reveals properties of sound-evoked inhibition in duration-tuned neurons of the inferior colliculus
-
By using a two tone stimuli approach, thus avoiding potential side effects of neuropharmocological manipulation, the authors demonstrated that duration-tuned responses arise from network level interactions. By quantifying the strength and time course of sound evoked inhibition, and the latency and timing of leading inhibition versus onset-evoked excitation, the BD of a neuron can be determined.

Reversible inactivation of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus reveals its role in the processing of multiple sound sources in the inferior colliculus of bats
-
The authors use extracellular recording with iontophoretic injections to study the processing of multiple sound sources originating from different locations in space. They show, by inactivating the DNLL, that the EI properties of the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (Icc) cells can be formed anew. In addition, they show that signals excitatory to EI cells in IC result in inhibition of the contralateral DNLL lasting 10s of milliseconds. The long-lasting inhibition in DNLL deprives the IC of inhibition from DNLL, which changes the response profiles of EI cells in Icc, essentially resulting in broader EI tuning.

Orienting responses and vocalizations produced by microstimulation in the superior colliculus of the echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus
-
The authors report that microstimulation of the bat SC elicits head and pinna movements, as observed in other mammals. In addition, SC microstimulation elicits sonar vocalizations coupled to head movements, implicating this neural structure in motor commands for the production as well as the reception of echolocation signals.

Periaqueductal gray and the region of the paralemniscal area have different functions in the control of vocalization in the neotropical bat, Phyllostomus discolor
-
The authors identify separate pathways for vocal production of communication sounds and echolocation sounds at the midbrain level. Using iontophoretic dialysis methods, they show two loci within the periaqueductal gray, one eliciting vocal communication sounds and the latter eliciting sonar vocalizations. The latter projects to the paralemniscal tegmentum area (PLa), and they demonstrate that inactivation of PLa blocks sonar production when the PAG sonar area is stimulated.
