    • The irradiation of cyclobutane in a xenon matrix with light of wavelength λ = 254 nm does produce a negligible yield (≤5% transformation in 17 h) in comparison to irradiation in an argon matrix. We trace this back to the presence of a small amount of halogen or other impurities that can form exciplexes.
