Significant decomposition of dfmpe is observed if the reaction mixture is allowed to warm to room temperature in the presence of excess hepa. The reaction of hepa with elemental sulfur to form hexaethylphosphorus triamide sulfide is rapid (even at low temperature), and warming the reaction mixture to room temperature after the hepa has been sulfurized results in no decomposition of dfmpe.

The yield of dfmpe can be increased (to ca. 30%) if the reaction mixture is extracted with perfluorohexanes (3 × 50 mL). No separation of dfmpe from perfluorohexane was attempted.
