An analogous calculation based on solution of the covariance matrix has been carried out by Nakazawa for the linear harmonic ordered chain with free boundary conditions; see Nakazawa H 1968 Prog. Theor. Phys. 39 236 Nakazawa H 1970 Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. 45 231 Nakazawa showed that in this case the temperature profile is constant along the chain except for the end masses. In any case, for both fixed and free ends a uniform local temperature appears away from the boundaries, which is usually interpreted as indicating an infinite thermal conductivity of these systems.
