Somatic embryogenesis in cultured immature zygotic embryos and leaf protoplasts of Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes
-
Luo Y, Koop H-U: Somatic embryogenesis in cultured immature zygotic embryos and leaf protoplasts of Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes. Planta 1997, 202:387-396. Pattern formation in the Arabidopsis embryo revealed by position-specific lipid transfer protein gene expression
-
Vroemen CW, Langeveld S, Mayer U, Ripper G, Jürgens G, Van Kammen A, De Vries SC: Pattern formation in the Arabidopsis embryo revealed by position-specific lipid transfer protein gene expression. Plant Cell 1996, 8:783-791. The expression of a marker gene was used to characterize the developmental effects of mutations in three genes causing pattern defects in the embryo. Specifically, apical-basal polarity was found to be impaired in gnom mutant embryos.

Identification of a meristem L1 layer-specific gene in Arabidopsis that is expressed during embryonic pattern formation and defines a new class of homeobox genes
-
Lu P, Porat R, Nadeau JA, O'Neill SD: Identification of a meristem L1 layer-specific gene in Arabidopsis that is expressed during embryonic pattern formation and defines a new class of homeobox genes. Plant Cell 1996, 8:2155-2168. The expression of ATML1 reveals the earliest cell fate specification events in embryogenesis. Specifically, this gene is first expressed in the apical daughter cell of the zygote and continues to be expressed in its progeny. Following the asymmetric divisions of these progeny in the eight cell stage embryo, gene expression becomes confined to the epidermis primordium.

The SCARECROW gene regulates an asymmetric cell division that is essential for generating the radial organization of the Arabidopsis root
-
Di Laurenzio L, Wysocka-Diller J, Malamy JE, Pysh L, Helariutta Y, Freshour G, Hahn MG, Feldmann KA, Benfey PN: The SCARECROW gene regulates an asymmetric cell division that is essential for generating the radial organization of the Arabidopsis root. Cell 1993, 86:423-433. The SCARECROW gene is required for the asymmetric cell divisions that generate cortex and endodermis from ground tissue. The gene is specifically expressed in the ground tissue cells and expression becomes confined to the endodermis after the asymmetric cell division.
