16. Other by-products observed were oxalic acid bis(imidoyl) diethyl esters (5 % to 50 % yield) deriving from alcoholysis of 1 with ethanol formed during the reaction.
17. Pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2,5-diones 4 proved almost insoluble in a variety of organic solvents which is, in fact, an important feature of synthetic pigments.
