The samples present very small concentrations of O, Se, and S. Auger microscopy was used to show that O was located at the surface of the sample and not in the crystallites. To quantify the concentration of Se and S, we performed EDS analysis on our samples (with a Philips TEM/STEM equipped with a twin-window EDS detector using a low-temperature double tilt low-background holder at 200 keV) in regions with and without crystalline particles. There is a negligible amount of Se, and there is some S that could not be quantified with respect to C and N by EDS. We then performed EELS, detected no Se, and quantified the concentration of S with respect to C to be 0.024±0.006 that is not significant and it is mainly located in the amorphous matrix. Therefore, we conclude that neither Se, S, nor O is associated with the crystallites.

4 by replacing the planar N by C. It is a very stable structure but does not have the cubic symmetry of the present samples. A more detailed study of metastable structures for different compositions is needed to definitively discern the composition of other possible (cubic and noncubic) carbon nitride crystallites.
