    • This collegiate exchange of opinions among engineers and psychologists was held after the unification of East and West Germany in 1990 and facilitated the evaluation, exchange, and mutual transfer of design methodologies and approaches as they were taught and practised in the previously separate parts of the country. In a joint agreement, a plan was established and drafted to proceed with teaching and future research goals in the most purposeful manner. The conference proceedings are available in the form of a concise conclusion and in a volume containing the individual papers, see G. PAHL (ed.): 'Psychologische und pädagogische Fragen beim methodischen Konstruieren [Psychological and pedagogical questions for methodical design]'; 1994, Cologne, Verlag TÜV Rheinland. The present review, written on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation, discusses the salient connections and ideas and those that arose after the conference, with emphasis on new aspects resulting from the forceful structural changes that have affected design and development in the machine industry.
