    • In the case of the polyion complexes studied here, it is somewhat difficult to establish unambiguously the molecular area at which the plateau ends. To compress the monolayer well beyond the plateau region, the sample must initially be spread at a nonzero surface pressure, and direct spreading at a surface coverage higher than the limiting molecular area is found to significantly alter the isotherm. In fact, this rise in surface pressure appears to be determined by the close proximity of the barriers to the Wilhelmy plate rather than by the molecular area of the monolayer. For this reason, we believe that the molecular area defining the end of the plateau is not a reliable characteristic of the monolayer.
