The role of conjugative transposons in spreading antibiotic resistance between bacteria that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract
-
Scott KP: The role of conjugative transposons in spreading antibiotic resistance between bacteria that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Cell Mol Life Sci 2002, 59:2071-2082. This paper reports that anaerobic bacteria of the human gastrointestinal tract can serve as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes, many of which are carried by mobile genetic elements. Evidence that gene transfer may occur between these reservoirs and various pathogenic bacteria is also presented.

The role of Bacteroides conjugative transposons in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes
-
Whittle G, Shoemaker NB, Salyers AA: The role of Bacteroides conjugative transposons in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes. Cell Mol Life Sci 2002, 59:2044-2054. This paper reports that members of the genus Bacteroides harbor a plethora of mobile genetic elements and provides an updated list of these elements. Extensive information on the class of elements known as conjugative transposons is also presented.
