19. The sodium salt of (-)-N-methylephedrine was prepared from the alcohol and NaH. The Eschweiler-Clarke procedure on (-)-ephedrine gave (-)-N-methylephedrine.
20. All new compounds were characterized with high resolution mass spectra, proton and carbon NMR and optical rotations. Purities were checked by gas chromatography.

22. A septum-sealed nitrogen filled test tube containing a solution of 3 (0. 5 mmol (138 mg) in 5 mL dry ether was cooled to -78°C. A solution of n-BuLi (0.55 mmol; 260 μL of 2.1 M in hexane) was added slowly via syringe. The reaction mixture was then placed in a -20°C freezer for 1 h before being used in further reactions.
