It is interesting if one can detect the van der Waals interaction working as the packing attraction force among the hydrocarbon chains. However, it seems impossible to detect the interaction by means of the infrared spectroscopy since the interaction does not appreciably change the state of C - H bond; see, for instance, P. W. Atkins, Physical Chemistry, 5th ed. (W. H. Freeman and Company, New York, 1994).
