TEM images were obtained with a Philips CM12 microscope operating at 120 kV. UV - vis absorption spectra were recorded in diffuse reflectance mode with a Cary 4E UV - visible spectrophotometer. Luminescence spectra were obtained with a Spex Fluorolog 1680 spectrophotometer (excitation and emission bandwidths were set at 1.0 nm). Details of the single particle light scattering experimental system and measurement details have been described elsewhere (Lichtenfeld, H.; Knapschinsky, L.; Sonntag, H.; Shilov, V. Colloids Surf. The agglutination experiments were recorded using an Agilent 8453 UV - visible spectrophotometer. Fluorescence microscopy measurements were obtained with a Zeiss Axioskop 2 microscope.
