Granulocyte transfusion therapy for infections in candidates and recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A comparative analysis of feasibility and outcome of community donors versus related donors

Transfusion (2002) 42(11):1414-1421. This article examines G-CSF- plus dexamethasone-augmented methods of granulocyte recovery. Overall clinical outcome was comparable between the 20 unrelated and 34 related donors and the 74 patients who served as controls, suggesting that unrelated community donors should be included in future efficacy trials.

Spleen enlargement in healthy donors during G-CSF mobilization of PBPCs
-
note
-
Platzbecker U, Prange-Krex G, Bornhauser M, Koch R, Soucek S, Aikele P, Haack A, Haag C, Schuler U, Berndt A, Ruth C et al.: Spleen enlargement in healthy donors during G-CSF mobilization of PBPCs. Transfusion (2001) 41(2):184-189. A primary issue surrounding the use of community donors to provide G-CSF-stimulated granulocyte products even as infrequently as once monthly is long-term toxicity to an otherwise healthy individual. Patients treated with G-CSF for congenital neutropenia represent the model population for identifying which events may occur (such as splenomegaly). This study used ultrasound to prospectively follow splenomegaly among healthy donors treated with five consecutive doses of G-CSF.
