note
-
The space-charge potential itself does not induce resonances but the periodic nature of external fields is essential. In fact, a perfectly matched beam traveling through a uniform focusing channel is always stable against perturbation even at very high density as long as we take a well realistic distribution function.

Owing to the existence of momentum dispersion, eq. (3) involves many additional terms that are not present in eq. (4). These dispersive terms can be a source of novel resonant instability. Sea ref. 6 for more detail.

note
-
Since the Sacherer's argument of resonance crossing was based on the envelope equation, it was not very clear whether a higher-order stopband could give rise to tune locking. The results in Fig. 7, however, indicate that higher-order resonances can also be a source of tune locking.

It is possible to extend one-dimensional cooling force to the other two degrees of freedom by using the resonant coupling method. H. Okamoto, A. M. Sessler and D. Möhl: Phys. Rev. Lett. 72 (1994) 3977.
