1. Imagine a vat of a liquid in which a tube is immersed from above the surface, and liquid is sucked up in the tube (a siphon). In an ordinary liquid, the flow stops as soon as the liquid surface falls below the tip of the tube. In contrast, in polymeric liquids upward flow continues, with part of the liquid column "hanging" from the tube tip (a tubeless siphon).
