The cataloger's bailiwick is descriptive cataloging, based on the AACR2 rules and using the MARC schema. As we will see, the long-term archiving of e-journals requires more than descriptive metadata.

Reality and Chimeras in the Preservation of Electronic Records

I will not spend much time discussing these preservation strategies. Each approach needs more technical research and evaluation, but all have been described. See Herman, David, "Reality and Chimeras in the Preservation of Electronic Records,"D-Lib Magazine, April 1999, Vol. 5, #4 (www.dlib.org); Rothenberg, Jeff, Avoiding Technological Quicksand: Finding a Viable Technical Foundation for Digital Preservation, CLIR, Jan. 1998; and Lawrence, George W., Kehoe, William R. et al., Risk Management of Digital Information: A File Format Investigation, CLIR, June 2000; Holdsworth, David & Wheatley, Paul, "Emulation, Preservation, and Abstraction,"RLG DigiNews, August 15, 2001, Vol. 5, #4 (www.rlg.org); and Granger, Stewart, "Emulation as a Digital Preservation Strategy,"D-Lib Magazine, October 2000.

-
One important drawback of Web versions of journals involves image resolution. Some e-journals simply can't reproduce with high fidelity the precision of detail that print captures and that scientists and artists value. For this reason, too, publishers continue to deem the print version the version of record.

METS, the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard, is one way of approaching this task. METS makes it possible to encode descriptive, administrative, structural, technical and provenance metadata in a structured manner. Details and the first release of the METS schema are available at http://www.loc.gov/standards/METS.

It is worth noting in passing how quickly we've grown the metaphorical scope of common verbs-to "navigate"or to "surf"-used to express our inclination, mood, ability, etc., when we move online and experience its dynamic qualities.

Current plans also include tracking and preserving changes in masthead and editorial information, but not such editorial content as advertisements. Whatever the reasons are that are given for not including advertisements in long-term archiving plans, the fact that they are typically generated on the fly, manifestly generated according to user profiles as detected and computed through user's computer habits, makes them currently impossible to archive. One distinct area of research that needs attention is the preservation of data and software that is generated on the fly and that generates other data and software of its own "will."

Miner's Son, Miner's Photographer: The Life and Work of George Harvan
-
See "Miner's Son, Miner's Photographer: The Life and Work of George Harvan,"in The Journal of MultiMedia History (http:/www.albany.edu/jmmh/), Volume 3, 2000. This "article"is an entry comprising an introduction, an exhibit of photographs, an oral history, an historical essay and credits. Peter Donaldson's piece, as mentioned earlier, also serves as a good example of newly articulated articles.

Because various Web browsers (and their versions) handle and display information differently, it is impossible ever to speak of a single, initial instantiation or "original,"as we are wont to do in print publishing.
