10. One important drawback of Web versions of journals involves image resolution. Some e-journals simply can't reproduce with high fidelity the precision of detail that print captures and that scientists and artists value. For this reason, too, publishers continue to deem the print version the version of record.

25. METS, the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard, is one way of approaching this task. METS makes it possible to encode descriptive, administrative, structural, technical and provenance metadata in a structured manner. 26. It is worth noting in passing how quickly we've grown the metaphorical scope of common verbs-to "navigate"or to "surf"-used to express our inclination, mood, ability, etc., when we move online and experience its dynamic qualities.
27. Current plans also include tracking and preserving changes in masthead and editorial information, but not such editorial content as advertisements. Whatever the reasons are that are given for not including advertisements in long-term archiving plans, the fact that they are typically generated on the fly, manifestly generated according to user profiles as detected and computed through user's computer habits, makes them currently impossible to archive. One distinct area of research that needs attention is the preservation of data and software that is generated on the fly and that generates other data and software of its own "will."
