    • The end-capping to produce a polymer of modest molecular weight was deliberately chosen to produce a polymer that could be annealed at such temperatures to avoid polymer destruction. With no end-capping group present, polymers of molecular weight in excess of 500 000 (GPC, PS standards) can be attained by this method, with an accompanying increase in onset temperature of the liquid-crystalline phase. Such temperatures, even when carried out in an inert atmosphere, can result in discoloration of the polymer.
