The wide U-band filter that we used was RGO#U8, with a central wavelength of 3557 Å, a half-peak wavelength of 344 Å, and a 74% transmission (M. Broxterman, personal communication).

Originally, the U-band results seemed to be in disagreement with those published by T. Galama et al. (31), but after comparing our data, we agreed on the estimated extinction coefficient value, that is, on the magnitudes of several field stars near the optical transient, and the discrepancy has been removed. Redshift z ≥ 0.835 was inferred from Keck spectroscopy on 11 May and 5 June 1997 on the basis of a metal-line absorption system [M. R. Metzger et al., Nature 387, 879 (1997)] and a faint [O II] emission line (32).

The fastest x-ray flare ever seen in an extragalactic object was observed in May 1994 in the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304. The x-ray flare was followed by a broader, lower amplitude extreme-UV flare ∼1 day later and a broad, low-amplitude UV flare ∼ 2 days later [E. Pian et al., Astrophys. J. 486, 784 (1997)].
