    • The symmetric orthonormalization presented here minimizes the state mixing of the non- orthonormal basis set {φionic, φcovalent} (see [21] and references therein) and preserves the charge character of the valence bond states. Since the coupling term between the orthonormal states defined here by the α(R) and β(R) mixing coefficients is negligeable compared to the associated diagonal potentials at large internuclear distances, we approximate the adiabatic states by the symmetrically orthonormalized states (see [21] for details).
