As (Formula presented) phonon emission occurs shortly after E overtakes ħω, so that phonon scattering is a deeply inelastic event nullifying the velocity instead of randomizing its direction. The particle’s motion is a series of ballistic flights down the field line. In actual solids, however, drift is observed owing to the nearly elastic interaction with low-frequency modes.
