Arthroscopic synovectomy of the elbow in rheumatoid arthritis
-
Horiuchi K, Shigeki M, Tomatsu T, et al.: Arthroscopic synovectomy of the elbow in rheumatoid arthritis. J Bone Joint Surg Am 2002, 84:342-347. This is a prospective study on the efficacy of arthroscopic synovectomy for varying degrees of rheumatoid arthritis of the elbow. Results correlated with rheumatologic involvement, and may have been improved with the addition of a more aggressive synovectomy in the posteromedial gutter and/or arthroscopic capsular release for those elbows with preoperative stiffness.

The Souter-Strathclyde elbow arthroplasty. A clinical and radiological study of 525 consecutive cases
-
Ikavalko M, Lehto MU, Repo A, et al.: The Souter-Strathclyde elbow arthroplasty. A clinical and radiological study of 525 consecutive cases. J Bone Joint Surg Br 2002, 84:77-82. This article reports a huge series of primary total elbow arthroplasties performed on rheumatoid elbows with the same implant at the same institution. The cumulative rate of success, as defined by implants without aseptic loosening, was 96% at 5 years and 85% at 10 years. However, there were 108 reoperations (21%) required to treat complications such as prosthetic instability, aseptic loosening, deep infections, and triceps ruptures.
