Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol 2001; 36:486-492. The aim of this study was to investigate EE in professional caregivers of clients with schizophrenia living in sheltered houses. The results of this study support the hypothesis that high levels of high EE can be found in these professionals and that this high EE was obtained based on the amount of criticism and hostility. Although EOI was very rare, role confusion did occur.

In this review, the CFI and 11 alternative EE measures are presented and discussed with regard to their psychometric properties. It is concluded that the CFI remains the best instrument for assessing the quality of the relationship.
