Differences in early childhood risk factors for juvenile-onset and adult-onset depression
-
Jaffee SR, Moffitt TE, Caspi A, et al. Differences in early childhood risk factors for juvenile-onset and adult-onset depression. Arch Gen Psychiatry 2002; 59:215-222. This is a longitudinal study remarkable for the duration of follow-up (birth to 26 years) and for the very careful attention to establishing temporal precedence among risk factors and outcome. This paper also contributes significantly to the understanding of the importance of considering age in assessing risk factors. Finally, the emphasis on effect sizes in addition to statistical significance is noteworthy.

Childhood adversities, interpersonal difficulties and risk for suicide attempts during late adolescence and early adulthood
-
Johnson JG, Cohen P, Gould MS, et al. Childhood adversities, interpersonal difficulties and risk for suicide attempts during late adolescence and early adulthood. Arch Gen Psychiatry 2002; 59:741-749. This is a longitudinal study that analyzed children 1-11 years of age, followed for approximately 18 years. While there may be some problems engendered by the span of ages at entry, this paper is noteworthy for having examined the possibility of one risk factor mediating or moderating another.

Relapse predictors of patients with bulimia nervosa who achieved abstinence through cognitive behavioral therapy
-
Halmi KA, Agras WS, Mitchell J, et al. Relapse predictors of patients with bulimia nervosa who achieved abstinence through cognitive behavioral therapy. Arch Gen Psychiatry 2002; 59:1105-1109. This is an example of a very short-term longitudinal study, examining risk factors for relapse after treatment. This illustrates that time of entry into a risk study may be determined by an event (end of treatment) rather than an age, and that the outcome may not be onset of a disorder, but relapse or recurrence. Moreover, it shows that sample sizes need not be very large when a high base-rate outcome is sought.

Childhood behavioral profiles leading to adolescent conduct disorder: Risk trajectories for boys and girls
-
Cote S, Tremblay RE, Nagin DS, et al. Childhood behavioral profiles leading to adolescent conduct disorder: risk trajectories for boys and girls. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 2002; 41:1086-1094. This is a longitudinal study following children from kindergarten to grade 6. This study examines trajectories; this is rarely done but is potentially very important. It analyzes boys and girls separately, and the data demonstrate the importance of this strategy. Particularly noteworthy is the full and clear presentation of descriptive statistics, effect sizes as well as significance levels, which facilitates consideration of the clinical and public health importance of the findings.

-
Desai MM, Bogardus ST, Williams CS, et al. Development and validation of a risk-adjustment index for older patients: the high-risk diagnoses for the elderly scale. J Am Geriatr Soc 2002; 50:474-481. This is a brief longitudinal study of hospitalized, older, general medical patients for risk factors for 1-year mortality. This study illustrates the close connection between risk-factor studies and the development of tools (here a risk-adlustment index) that could be useful for clinical decision-making.
