The definition of “Tories” and “Whigs” in this period, particularly the 1690s, is fraught with difficulty. As, points out, the terms were disputed even by contemporaries, [Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 271–72, 295–97). In general, Tories who accepted the Glorious Revolution (those who did not were Jacobites) accepted William as a de facto monarch and assumed a Stuart succession would continue with and beyond Anne. The definition of “Tories” and “Whigs” in this period, particularly the 1690s, is fraught with difficulty. As J. P. Kenyon points out, the terms were disputed even by contemporaries (Stuart England [Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1978], pp. 12, 271–72, 295–97). In general, Tories who accepted the Glorious Revolution (those who did not were Jacobites) accepted William as a de facto monarch and assumed a Stuart succession would continue with and beyond Anne. For them, the Act of Settlement of 170was a turning point. In the late 1690s, the Tories associated themselves with the High Church revival.
