    • Collective economic organization is rather unusual in present rural China, where the development of the household responsibility system and market economy have decolletivized and decentralized the social and economic structure in many villages.

    • In a minor marriage, a daughter-in-law is adopted into her husband's family as a young child and brought up there with her husband together as sister and brother. Once both she and her intended husband reach maturity, they will marry and they change from being like brother and sister to being husband and wife. This practice was especially common in northern Taiwan until the early 1900s. Arthur Wolf has conducted extensive studies on minor marriage and its effects on fertility. His findings are published in Sexual Attraction and Childhood Association: A Chinese Brief for Edward Westennarch (Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1995).
