The historical context of the justice, welfare, treatment and punishment paradoxes in juvenile justice are considered, alongside issues of definition, size of the problem, assessment range of interventions and an increasing recent evidence base for efficacy of treatment and outcomes. Of particular relevance is the role of mental health practitioners in assessment and treatment of young delinquents, their potential role in court proceedings, application of risk and needs assessment, the challenge of service delivery and the complex interplay between offending and mental disorder in the developmental stage of adolescence.
