2. Thermal noise is a manifestation of the internal energy of a physical system at thermal equilibrium with its environment. This energy is shared between all its degrees of freedom or, equivalently, between all its normal modes each carrying an average energy kT, where k is the Boltzmann constant and T the equilibrium temperature. Such an energy manifests itself as a random fluctuation of the relevant observable and it is experimentally perceived us the noise affecting its measured value.
