35. Strictly speaking, the loading of each column should continue until the ion-exchange equilibrium is achieved. This can be done by using a two-column setup at each stage, so that the first column is working in the "up-to-breakthrough" mode of operation, while the second continues being equilibrated with the respective solution. After equilibration, stripping, and preparation of this column for the next run, solution flux leaving the first column can be switched to the inlet of second one, while the first column is now operating in an "equilibration" mode.
