See Bruijn, H. de and Heuvelhof E. ten (2000) Networks and Decision Making, Utrecht, Lemma, for an explanation of serendipitism in network management. Goodin sees built-in flexibility as an institutional design principle; he refers to the 'revisability' of the design [12].

How social networks influence the dissemination of cleaner technologies to SMEs
-
This analysis is taken from [6] and Verheul, H. (1999) 'How social networks influence the dissemination of cleaner technologies to SMEs', Journal of Cleaner Production, Vol. 7, pp.213-219. The connection between institutional relationships and the diffusion of environmental technology in the metal-plating industry is mapped out by identifying patterns in the interactions around innovation processes and adoption decisions of some technologies in certain companies. These patterns were compared with statements by involved and key players about the general relationships between actors in the sector. Semi-structured interviews and internal documents formed the main data sources.
