    • Peeker R, Fall M. Toward a precise definition of interstitial cystitis: further evidence of differences in classic and nonulcer disease. J Urol 2002; 167:2470-2472. Today interstitial cystitis is often divided into classic and nonulcer disease. The study demonstrates that the two subtypes of interstitial cystitis represent separate entities. It is suggested that the two subtypes are evaluated separately in clinical studies.

Am J Obstet Gynecol 2002; 187:1395-1400. Determined the prevalence of interstitial cystitis in a large number of gynecologic patients with pelvic pain compared with controls, as indicated by a positive result on a potassium sensitivity test. Interstitial cystitis may be a common unrecognized cause of pelvic pain in gynecologic patients and deserves greater consideration in the differential diagnosis of pelvic pain.

    • Erickson DR, Xie SX, Bhavanandan VP, et al. A comparison of multiple urine markers for interstitial cystitis. J Urol 2002; 167:2461-2469. In this study 14 urine markers for interstitial cystitis were tested in 24 h specimens from 36 female patients with interstitial cystitis and 36 age-matched female volunteers. Of all markers studied the antiproliferative factor had the least overlap in the interstitial cystitis and control group, so it may be useful as a diagnostic test. No correlation of marker levels with symptom score was noted in interstitial cystitis patients.

    • Keay SK, Warren JW. Is interstitial cystitis an infectious disease? Int J Antimicrob Agents 2002; 19:480-483. Many interstitial cystitis patients have a small amount of toxic factor (APF) in the urine that may play a role in the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis. Whether APF is produced by the epithelial cells of interstitial cystitis patients or an unidentified intracellular microorganism is discussed in this paper and remains to be determined.
