This study addressed sodium/hydrogen exchanger transport activity/transporter abundance during hypertension and concludes that NHE3 are not inactivated before transit out of the microvilli.

This paper focuses on NHE3 in the proximal tubule (in both kidneys) and provides the first evidence that NHE3 pool size in the microvilli can be acutely increased by redistribution from a store that may be in the intermicrovillar coated pit region.

This and other cited papers by Gekle and coworkers provide evidence that NHE3 is necessary for efficient receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligands in cultured cells of proximal tubule origin. Here, this group shows, in a model using cellular knockout followed by retransfection, that NHE3 supports receptor-mediated endocytosis and imparts cyclic AMP sensitivity to the process.
