The authors found that the risk for Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma increased with the level of immunosuppression at AIDS onset but that no other cancers, including cervical cancer, were related to declining CD4 counts.

The authors found a significantly increased incidence of Hodgkin disease, multiple myeloma, leukemia, lip cancer, and lung cancer among people with AIDS. In addition, they found that the incidence Hodgkin disease, in particular, increased at the time of AIDS diagnosis.

Data from the linked population-based AIDS and cancer registries are reported. This is a good epidemiologic descriptive study of adults with AIDS diagnosed between 1978 and 1996. This study does not incorporate post-HAART information. The authors did evaluate which non-AIDS-defining cancers were influenced by advancing immunosuppression associated with HIV disease progression.

This is a large longitudinal cohort evaluation of a group of intravenous drug users and HIV-positive men. The authors evaluated age-standardized incidence ratios for both groups. They found that HIV infection increased the risk of Hodgkin disease and perhaps hepatocellular carcinoma. However, they found that the risk for lung cancer was elevated in both cohorts.
