It is shown here that for a system in a magnetic field, the propagator for a time τ is the same as for the unperturbed system multiplied by the phase factor exp [inline formula] with the vector potential evaluated at the midpoint of the path plus correction terms of [inline formula] The same result holds for the density matrix. For a constant magnetic field, the midpoint rule makes no difference. Equation (2) results in the usual fashion by combining high temperature density matrices and then multiplying and dividing by [inline formula] to convert a sum over paths to an average. See also Sec.
