note
-
All along there has been quite a lot of confusion about what energy is to be minimized. It is important to remember that F is the Helmoltz free energy. In general the equilibrium configuration does not correspond to the minimum of the Helmoltz free energy. Only in the case when solvent particles are treated as an ideal gas can this be justified, see discussion after Eq. (23). For interacting solvents one must always work with a Gibbs free energy.
