Aggregation behavior of cationic fluorosurfactants in water and salt solutions. A cryo-TEM survey
-
note
-
Wang K, Karlsson G, Almgren M, Asakawa T. Aggregation behavior of cationic fluorosurfactants in water and salt solutions. A cryo-TEM survey. J Phys Chem B 1999;103(43):9237-46. Aggregate structure of the fluorinated cationic surfactants in aqueous solution was made clear using cryo-TEM. The fluorinated cationic surfactants have a tendency to form aggregate structure with less curvature and the aggregates are very sensitive to surfactant concentrations, added salt, and to the alkyl chain length.

The dissolution into water of solid fluorinated cationic surfactant is investigated for four homologous surfactants with different alkyl chain lengths. The process from solid state to dissolved aggregate state requires longer time to reach thermodynamic equilibrium for the longer chained fluorinated surfactant and the time period for equilibrium can be shortened by heating the system at 338 K.

-
note
-
Stähler K, Selb J, Candau F. Multicompartment polymeric micelles based on hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon polymerizable surfactants. Langmuir 1999;15(22):7565-76. Solubilization experiments confirm the specific behavior of terpolymer of acrylamide with both H- and F-surfmers, which arises from the presence of mutually incompatible hydrophobic microdomains on the same water-soluble polymeric backbone. In addition, a solublizate probe of 1-perfluorooctanoyl pyrene is remarkable in the sense of non-selective solubilization into the aggregates of the mixed fluorinated and hydrogenated surfactants.
