27. We emphasize that this "soft" transition to chaos occurs in a regime (large n̄, relatively small g) rather far removed from the one that has been studied quite thoroughly by R. F. Fox and J. Eidson, Phys. Rev. A 34, 482 (1986), where the system (2) behaves like a perturbed Chirikov pendulum. With our pa rameters, and for the j=1/2 case, that regime would correspond to extremely small AT and very large g.
