    • The Mainland Affairs Council of the ROC Government collates and reproduces the results of the main opinion surveys conducted independently in Taiwan. This information is readily available on the internet (http://www.mac.gov.rw/english/POS/ 890315/8903e_1.gif). The percentage in support of independence as soon as possible usually hovers between 5 and 10% between 1996 and early 2000, reaching a high point of 14% in August 1999. The 85% in favour of maintaining the current situation includes those who also express a wish to see Taiwan become independent eventually, and those who would also like to see unification in the future. The percentage in support of unification includes those who support it as soon as possible and those who favour maintaining the current situation but who support unification eventually.

Jiang first stated this position on 30 January 1995 before the death of the then paramount leader Deng Xiaoping. The statement of 1997 was made after the retrocession of Hong Kong and the death of Deng when Jiang clearly consolidated his position as the top leader in China.
