1. In an earlier article in Long Range Planning 'Strategic Planning isn't Dead - It Changed' (Vol. 27. No.4, August 1994), I argued that 'strategic planning is clearly transforming into strategic management. That is, it is moving away from a largely staff-driven exercise... focused on the development of strategies; toward an executive-driven activity...focused on the implementation of strategy.' However, for simplicity's sake in this article, I shall use the term 'strategic planning' to cover both phases of this evolving methodology.
