The international congress on Kerala studies
-
Tharamangalam cites volume 1 of the Congress abstracts (of which there are 5 volumes and a supplement). Three published accounts of the Congress may be more accessible to BCAS readers. A brief summary appears in Richard W. Franke and Barbara H. Chasin, "The International Congress on Kerala Studies," Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars 26, no. 3 (1994): 72-73. In that report we note (p. 72) that "The emphasis of the Kerala model papers and discussions was on the many serious problems faced by the state's people." A detailed overview with substantial analysis appears in T. M. Thomas Isaac and Michael P. K. Tharakan, "Kerala: Towards a New Agenda," Economic and Political Weekly 30, nos. 31-32 (1995): 1993-2004. A similar version of their article was published in Social Scientist 23, nos. 1-3 (1995): 3-36, under the title "Kerala: The Emerging Perspectives. Overview of the International Congress on Kerala Studies." T. M. Thomas Isaac and Michael Tharakan were among the major organizers of the Congress. The same volume of Social Scientist contains five papers from the Congress presented by major Indian intellectuals. In a follow-up paper requested by the Congress organizers, we summarized the main critiques of the Kerala model and offered our recommendations for greater attention to the needs of women and female-headed households. See Richard W. Franke and Barbara H. Chasin, "Female-supported Households: A Continuing Agenda for the Kerala Model?" Economic and Political Weekly 31, no. 10 (1996): 625-30.

Is the Kerala model sustainable? Lessons from the past: Prospects for the future
-
New Delhi. 9-11 December
-
References for these data can be found in our paper: "Is the Kerala Model Sustainable? Lessons from the Past: Prospects for the Future." Presented at the International Conference on Kerala's Development Experience: National and Global Dimensions, New Delhi. 9-11 December 1996. The complete text and the texts of several of our other recent papers can be downloaded from Franke's homepage: http://www.chss.montclair.edu/anthro/kerala.html. This homepage also includes two extensive Kerala bibliographies that can be downloaded. We compared the years 1989 and 1993 because they are the only recent years for which we could find IMR statistics for both states.
