    • Two studies have shown that student loan default rates are much higher for holders of GED diplomas than for other high school graduates. However, both studies are based on data from the 1970s, and the student loan programs have changed since then. There seems to be no research on this subject based on more recent data.

    • The tendency of male holders of GED diplomas to work less and have more job turnover than dropouts could indicate a lack of persistence. It could also be that these men work less because they are getting additional education and training, and they have more job turnover because the credential opens up new job opportunities. However, the latter explanation would not account for the fact that both female holders of GED diplomas and high school graduates work more and have less turnover than males with GED diplomas.
