13. We have recently measured the O K-edge XANES spectra of (Formula presented), Si, and Co. The spectra of (Formula presented) and Si are similar to that of pure molecular oxygen [see M. W. Ruckman et. al Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 2533 (1991)] suggesting predominantly O-O bonding of molecular oxygen on the surfaces of the samples. Together with the Co K-edge EXAFS results shown below, these characterization studies show negligible oxidation of (Formula presented). On the other hand, the O K-edge XANES spectrum of Co shows O-Co bonding may have occurred in that sample.
